Ciudad Juarez: The world's murder capital
An average of seven murders a day in 2009, in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, a city of about 1.5 million people, has the highest homicide rates in the world.
"The escalation of murders in Ciudad Juarez is the result of a turf war between the growing Sinaloa cartel led by Mexico's most wanted man, Joaquin" El Chapo "Guzman and the Juarez cartel, according to Victor Valencia , the secretary of public safety in the state of Chihuahua "(BBC).
Of the 1,986 murders so far in 2009 - a jump from 815 in 2008 - the majority of gang members involved in a feud drug cartel fighting to gain control of local drug and route smuggling in El Paso, Texas, located just across the border. El Paso "has been for years the main transit point for cocaine passing from Mexico into the U.S.."
"The annual rate of murders in Juarez has reached 133 per 100,000 inhabitants, surpassing Caracas, Venezuela. The murder rate in New York like last year was six per 100,000 "(The Telegraph).
Of the nearly 2,000 murders, the victims included 107 women, 85 children and 49 police officers. Many of the deaths involved beheadings, dismemberment - even destroying the victim tied to two trucks. Most of the killings remain unsolved.
